Parks and Green Areas in Dusseldorf

  • The Hofgarten (courtyard garden), situated in the suburb of the city center / Pempelfort, is a popular destination for a relaxing walk in the countryside. Founded in by Nicolas de Pigage, it is Germany’s first and oldest public garden. In 2002, the courtyard was part of the decentralized State Garden Show and was redeveloped and redesigned for EuroGA, including its retail areas. Spanning about 27 hectares, the courtyard offers pure relaxation, historic monuments and modern sculptures, all providing a pleasant break from urban life.

  • The Botanical Garden of the Heinrich-Heine University is located south of Düsseldorf at the Himmelgeister Rheinbogen (bend in the Rhine). As a research facility, it is dedicated to research and teaching, but it is also open to visitors throughout the year, offering a range of events such as exhibitions, expert guided tours and lectures. The Botanical Garden was founded in 1974 and is focused mainly on plants from temperate climate zones. The impressive centerpiece of the garden is an 18 m (59 ft) tall glass dome that covers a more than 1,000 sq m (10,764 sq ft) unheated greenhouse, which houses approximately 400 plant species from areas with warm, dry summers and rainy winters. In addition to vegetation characteristic of the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, plants from around the world are on display, including from Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, Chile and California.

  • The Nordpark (North Park) is an experience in the district of Stockum: green spaces, water features, sculptures, old trees and children's play facilities – the variety is great and has helped to make this park one of the city’s most visited parks. There are about 36 hectares with many discovery walks.  Park tables and chairs are available, so visitors can switch from walking and relax.

  • The 70-hectare Sudpark (South Park) in the district of Oberbilk-Wersten is one of the largest parks in Düsseldorf. In 1987, it became a federal show garden of national significance, a standing that persists to this day. The garden’s planned natural landscape and habitat areas form an axis and provide families and amateur biologists much room for enjoyment.

  • Benrath Palace and Park
This palace park area is comprised of 61 hectares. Over the course of the 2002 EuroGA, several sections of the park were fondly and generously restored, inviting visitors to jaunt within the pleasure and hunting garden just like in the eighteenth century. Furthermore, visitors can learn how the pantry of the palace was once supplied with fresh herbs and vegetables from the former kitchen garden, or Potager. Castle Benrath is one of the most popular attractions in Dusseldorf.
